A legacy that flows forward
If you’ve been to Ohio River Paddlefest, you likely know the ever-present megaphone in Brewster Rhoads’ hand. But for more than 50 years, Brewster has been doing far more than calling out directions — he’s been organizing, advocating and turning ideas into action that has shaped our region. His leadership has strengthened public schools and our extraordinary zoo and park system, advanced environmental efforts, and helped connect people more deeply to the places and communities they care about.
And, throughout all that he has done, one of his deepest beliefs is that investing in the next generation is the most powerful way to create lasting change.
We’re celebrating Brewster in true fashion with a lively, one-of-a-kind event, The Rhoast, on May 7 and launching the new Rivers & Rhoads Fund in his honor, creating access to and celebration of the outdoors for teens in our city.
This event isn’t just about looking back. It’s about investing forward.
At Adventure Crew, we see Brewster’s spirit in our teens every day. The curiosity, the leadership, the passion for the outdoors, willingness to step into something new and inspire others to come along with you. We call them our “Future Brewsters” — young people building confidence, connection and a lifelong relationship with the outdoors. Through our Crew Pathways programs, teens can spend up to six years forging their own unique relationships with nature, starting with their first adventure and growing into deeper skills, environmental stewardship and leadership.
We estimate that it costs about $1,000 to support one teen for a full year of programming. Every gift to the Rivers & Rhoads Fund fuels pathways to the outdoors for a young person who might not otherwise have that opportunity to paddle our rivers, explore local trails, and grow as an outdoor enthusiast, environmental steward and changemaker.
Brewster chose Adventure Crew as his investment in the next generation. We invite you to join him by supporting the Rivers & Rhoads Fund.
Together, we can carry his legacy forward, ensuring more young people have access to the outdoors and the chance to lead, connect and thrive.
With gratitude,
Libby
